Coaching, at its best, is a generative practice — one with deep roots. Generative leadership traces its conceptual origins to Erikson’s work on human development: a fundamental orientation toward growth, care, and investment in the next generation. Over time, that foundation expanded through relational development, organizational health, and adaptive complexity. Dr. Neal Anderson’s research contributed the first convergence of these threads into a unified framework — one where intentional relationships, innovation, growth and development, and adaptability are not separate ideals but interlocking commitments. At CARTO Leadership, this convergence shapes every coaching engagement. Coaching begins with relational intentionality and moves toward developing leaders who think clearly, adapt well, resource others generously, and build influence that outlasts them. Like generative leadership itself, effective coaching is not focused on a single dimension of a person — it is oriented toward the whole, and toward what they will generate in others.
Dr. Neal Anderson is the founder of CARTO Leadership. Neal has worked with emerging leaders for 18 years, with an emphasis on leadership and interpersonal development. He has an earned PhD in Organizational Leadership from Regent University where his research included generative leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, transformational leadership, and small group dynamics. Neal serves as the principal consultant and coach of CARTO Leadership.
Neal is known for developing the potential of people and for his warm and empowering manner of helping leaders access their best work. He enjoys local coffee, skiing, and weekend hikes in the Rockies.
Ash Anderson is a co-founder of CARTO Leadership. With an MA in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College, Ash serves as an advisor for all CARTO resources and material, as well as a contributing writer and editor of CARTO content. As a licensed counselor, Ash brings expertise around healthy dynamics, personal development, interpersonal skill development, and communication skills.
Ash is known for her insight into people and problems, her empathic and practical approach, and her skill of translating valuable information into good writing. She can always be found reading a book and loves photography, cities, national parks, cooking, and writing.

Audrianna Cageao is a marketing and communications expert with experience in higher ed, team leadership and culture building. She gets excited about developing strong leaders who lead with passion and purpose. She has her Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Concordia University.
She lives in Oak Park, IL with her husband, Nic, and her two children, Lily and Isaac.
Joe DeGraaf is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, university instructor, and professional certified Life Coach. His work and passions revolve around developing purpose and meaningful productivity in his students and clients. He holds a Master’s in Executive Development for Public Service and Adult & Community Education as well as a Graduate Certificate in Business from Ball State University.
He lives in Marion, IN with his wife, Kelsey, and their two children, Sadie and James.
